Ear Micro-Suctioning & optional Hearing Test

Ear suctioning or ear irrigation is a delicate treatment and it is important that you seek a medical professional that has been trained and has experience with the anatomy of the human body.

The Tympa System makes this treatment safe and gives a lot of comfort to the patient. The difference between suctioning and irrigation is, one uses air to pull the ear wax towards the scope and the other uses water to flush the wax out (this can be a little messy and distressing due to the noise and the high water pressure in a very small narrow space). There is a place for both types, but suctioning is more universal and safer to use.

Irrigation is not suitable for perforated ear drums, past trauma, infections or someone that suffers from earache, whereas suctioning can be used in most situations, prior to a consultation to inspect the ear canal to determine the best course of treatment.

The treatment may require two visits, the first is a consultation to determine the cause of your hearing loss/issues. At this appointment we may provide you with drops to soften the wax and make extraction easier and more comfortable.

The second appointment is to extract the imbedded wax deposit, this can be between one to two weeks later. At this appointment we can also carry out an optional hearing test to check how your hearing is functioning. If there is an issue at any point we will also refer back to your GP or your local Audiology Department for further tests as you may need a hearing aid or you may have an infection.

Ear wax is the mucus your ears secrete to condition and protect the ear canal and inhibits good ear hygiene. Your ears are capable of self cleaning but over production of wax makes it difficult to clear effectively, especially when we develop a medical condition or suffer with other issues like continuous earache infections etc.....

The worst way to clean your own ears is to use cotton buds or similar. These are dangerous because they can break off adding to pressure or further infection to the ear canal, plus they push wax further down the canal adding pressure against the tympanic membrane.

The Tympa System is effective and patient friendly that offers some great feature making the whole experience comfortable and easy.

Patients can book directly or we will receive a referral (letter or email) directly from your GP/Practice Nurse to treat you. We are a private clinic and not funded by the NHS so we do charge fees for our services. We are very competitive and always promise to look after our patients, plus we are medically trained.

Visit one: 

• Consultation - to inspect both ears and determine the issue and course of treatment
• Ear drops (if needed)
• Advice
• Follow-up appointment

Visit Two:

• Reinspect both ears to see if the issue requires further investigation and the wax is soft enough to extract.
• Evacuate the wax deposits using the Tympa System with remote viewing, allowing us to video or take pictures of the inner ear
• Simple and effective treatment
• Offer aftercare advice
• Refer on to GP or external clinic (if needed)
• Offer a follow up appointment (if needed)

PLEASE NOTE, WE DO NOT HAVE DISABLED FACILITIES AT OUR CLINIC. WE ARE LOCATED ON THE FIRST FLOOR IN THE BUILDING WITH A FLIGHT OF STAIRS TO CLIMB. IF YOU HAVE MOBILITY ISSUES, THEN A HOME VISIT IS RECOMMENDED!

Here at Peppermint we are able to assess a Childs ears but over the age of 5.

Generally we would advise you to seek medical advice from your GP for children aged between birth and 18 years old.

A minors ears are very delicate and damage is easily caused by an infection, injury or another type of medical condition.

We are able to inspect and assess and refer to your GP or Audiology department. Ear wax removal is possible providing there is a clear build up of wax in the ear canal providing there is no visible infection.

We only visit house bound patients or with poor mobility issues in their homes, otherwise we require all other patients to book a clinic appointment.

Home visits are carried out on a Monday and clinic appointments are carried out on a Wednesday.
